Artist Adam Dant designs East End Trades Guild’s map for ‘Independents’ weekend

27th November 2017

World-renowned artist Adam Dant is putting independent businesses firmly on the map in London’s East End.

Adam was chosen by East End Trades Guild founding member Nevio Pellicci, owner of Bethnal Green’s famous Pellicci café, as the artist for their map of where their businesses are located.

Some 20,000 copies have been produced by Calvert’s cooperative printers off Hackney Road for this year’s East End Independents’ Weekend.

Adam met Guild members at their Bastille Day summer social at Shoreditch Church.

“Their stories were moving,” he recalls. “These traders champion independent businesses in a world where chain stores and corporates are taking over the high street.”

The hand-drawn map coloured with Indian ink is being given out by businesses taking part in the traders’ weekend starting Friday, which includes ‘Small Business’ Saturday.

Among the shopping areas involved are Spitalfields, Shoreditch, Brick Lane, Bethnal Green Road, Columbia Road, Roman Road, Broadway Market at London Fields, Well Street and Victoria Park.

The map—commissioned by East End Trades Guild which is organising the Weekend—features iconic businesses, such as Cooke’s pie’n’mash, Brick Lane Beigel Bake, Gardner’s Bags, Ally Capellino, Tatty Devine and Pellicci’s café. It is a panorama of “what makes East London tick”.
